ALLEYS PROJECT
About
The Alleys Group engages with community members, business owners, and residents in Logan Heights living within a close vicinity of the alleyway on 30th and 31st Street. Through interviews conducted in English and Spanish and an ethnographic approach to understanding the usage of the alley, the group uncovered the lack of safety and security in the alley after sundown.
The Project
To address safety concerns, the team developed a Lighting Pilot Plan, implementing sustainable, low-maintenance solar-powered and motion-sensed lighting fixtures. A pre- and post-survey revealed that lighting was a major issue for residents.
During a two-week test period, solar-powered lights were installed, and residents shared feedback on their impact.
After
Through the post-survey, we received feedback that 100% of the businesses involved in the project were pleased with the lighting improvements and opted to keep the fixtures installed past the initial trial period. This initiative ensures a safer, more accessible alley space while maintaining community-driven solutions.
